April 10, 2017 General Meeting and Flower Show

Just to remind you of our second general meeting of 2017 on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 7.30 at the Churchill Community Centre, 6322 Yonge Street (County Road 4) just north of Killarney Beach Road in Innisfil.

Our speaker for the evening, David Hawke, Program Manager at Couchiching Conservancy and writer is returning (by popular demand) to speak on Fences and their role in our history.

We will have our first flower show of 2017 and just to remind you – entries must be in place between 6.30 and 7.10 p.m. as judging will start promptly at 7.10 p.m.

Remember – houseplants must have belonged to the exhibitor for at least three months prior to exhibiting.

The Flower Show Committee have this year separated the Advanced designers from the Beginners and given them easier designs to do – so we are hoping that you will take up the challenge and bring in your designs – if you need any help please do not hesitate to call me at 705-456-3163.

March 13, 2017 First General Meeting

Just to remind you of our first general meeting on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 7.30 at the Churchill Community Centre, 6322 Yonge Street (County Road 4) just North of Killarney Beach Road in Innisfil.

Our speaker for the evening is Frank Solty of Solty Farms in Cookstown, who will be informing us how and when to prune our trees and shrubs.

The refreshments of the evening are provided courtesy of your Executive.

Tonight is also the night to renew your membership – $15.00 per adult – $20 per Family.

November 2016 AGM and Pot Luck Supper

Just to remind you of our Annual General Meeting and Pot Luck Supper on November 13, 2016 – 4 o’clock sharp at the Churchill Community Centre.

Join Us for a Celebratory Dinner, and as we are going green please bring your own plates and cutlery, dessert plates and cups will be provided

The Agenda includes Presentation of Awards, Photo Contest Results, Election of the 2017 Executive and last but not least Door Prizes.

If you haven’t cast your vote for or against our society’s proposed name change you will be able to do so at this time.

October 2016 General Meeting and Flower Show

1st Reminder – Our last General Meeting and Flower Show is Monday, October 3, 2016 at 7.30 at the Churchill Community Centre (one week earlier than usual because of Thanksgiving long weekend).

Wolfegang Bonham of Peace and Love Landscaping will give us tips on “How to create an Interesting and intriguing Garden”.

2nd Reminder – Please bring in your ‘Volunteer Hours’.

See page number 49 from your Yearbook – please fill in how many volunteer hours you have worked in 2016 and in which categories.
Remember preparations for meetings and hours “working” at the meetings count.
We need to have your hours in well before the AGM as we need them to apply for certain grants etc. – if you can’t make the meeting please e-mail them to: Jenni.murrell@rogers.com

3rd Reminder – Please bring in your photos for the Photo competition.

If you can’t make the meeting the photos will have to be delivered to Eve within a week at 3374 Mason Drive in Innisfil. For further information call Eve at 705-436-4776 or e-mail her at eveteras@hotmail.com

4th Reminder – Motion to change the Public Name of the Gilford & District Horticultural Society to Innisfil Garden Club.

Please cast you ballot at the October meeting or at the AGM. If you can’t make either meeting please mail your ballot to Gilford & District Horticultural Society, Box 73, Lefroy, ON, L0L 1W0.

The ballot is on the last page of the July 2016 Iris – Newsletter or pick up one at the membership desk.

5th Reminder – Our last flower show of the Year – let’s make it great – bring in your Chrysanthemums – you might just win the award – and whatever else is still blooming in your gardens.

Your designs are: ‘Fall Fare’, a design in a basket and ‘Approaching winter’, a horizontal design

July 2016 General Meeting and Flower Show

Just to remind you of our General Meeting and Flower Show this coming Monday, July 11, 2016 at 7.30 p.m. at the Churchill Community Centre.

Our speaker for the evening is Marion Jarvie of Richmond Hill, a well known gardener for over 40 years, who will introduce us to ‘Hardy Gems for Ontario Gardens’.

The Society Library will be set up as usual so you can return your books and take out new ones.

We will have our fourth flower show of 2016 – and this time the Floating Rose Show (page 26 in your Yearbook) will be included.

Please bring your lilies as the Lily Award may be won that evening.

The floral designs for both advanced and beginning designers are:

‘Summer Glory’, a diagonal design and ‘Woodland Awakening’, a design incorporating wood.

June 2016 General Meeting and Flower Show

Just to remind you of our General Meeting this coming Monday, June 13, 2016 at 7.30 p.m. at the Churchill Community Centre.

Our speaker for the evening is David Hawke, Stewardship Program Manager at Couchiching Conservatory and Writer, who will be teaching us all about the poisonous plants to be found in and around Simcoe County.

The Society Library will be set up as usual so you can return your books and take out new ones.

We will have our third flower show of 2016 – remember entries must be in place between 6.30 and 7.10 p.m. as judging will start promptly at 7.10 p.m.

As roses are a bit late this year our Floating Rose Show will be attached to the July flower show.

 

 

May 2016 General Meeting

Just to remind you of our General Meeting this coming Monday, May 9, 2016 at 7.30 at the Churchill Community Centre.

Our speaker for the evening will be Koidu Sulev, a representative of Richter’s Herbs, who will discuss with us the benefits of herbs, both culinary and medicinal – great natural alternatives.

The Society Library table will be set up as usual so you can bring back and check out books. We will have a lot of books on herb gardening and herb uses (cooking) and I will be bringing several. Should you wish to take out a particular book click on the Society Library page on the website to see what is available – e-mail me the title and the number in the left hand margin and I will bring it on Monday.

In order to celebrate GardenOntario Week in 2016 we have set up a Garden Tour with 5 gardens ending with tea served in the last garden – cost will be 15.00 per person. We will have tickets available for sale at the meeting.

We will also have 2 flats of the Kelsae Sweet Spanish Onions from Lakeview Gardens in Lefroy for sale for the contest at the Fall Flower and Vegetable Show in September – if you exhibit the largest onion you will win a Gift Certificate for $50.00 and receive the onion award. April 2016 General Meeting

Members of our Society John Craw, Linda Crome and Judith Matchett will share with us their knowledge of how to start our own seedlings and talk on how to get seeds ready for planting in the garden. A question and answer session will follow.

‘Petit Point’, a small design, 5 1/2″ – 10″, not exceeding 10″ in any direction – height, width, depth and diagonal, see OJES page 104.
